Overlooked Siblings of Italian Wine Superstars July 10 Virtual Tasting

Overlooked Siblings of Italian Wine Superstars

Virtual (Zoom) Tasting

Friday, July 10, 9:00PM Eastern 6:00PM Pacific

As the younger sibling of an extremally successful brother, I have always had a special place in my heart for talented actors and sports stars that were overshadowed by their more successful siblings. Think Frank Stallone, Joey Travolta, Billy Ripken, Dom DiMaggio, and Jerry Van Dyke. The same is true in the world of Italian wine. Piedmont superstar Barolo overshadows its sibling Nebbiolo D’Alba. In Tuscany, the much-acclaimed Brunello di Montalcino is in the spotlight while it’s little brother Rosso di Montalcino operates in the shadows. And finally, Amarone Della Valpolicella rarely lets it younger sister, Valpolicella Rapasso get the attention she deserves.
Another similarity between the overshadowed wines and their entertainment/sports counterparts is that they work cheap. While the more famous wines command prices of $40-$50 and beyond, despite using the same grapes and being from the same area, the less-heralded wines can be had starting in the mid-teens.
We are about to give those overlooked little/brothers and sisters their moment in the sun.
For the next virtual tasting, we are going to try all three of the overshadowed wines. All of them are outstanding values that you don’t have to wait for a special occasion to enjoy. Great Tuesday night pasta/pizza wines.
Any brand, any vintage of Nebbiolo D’Alba (if for some reason you can't find it you can substitute a Langhe Nebbiolo), Rosso di Montalcino, and Valpolicella Rapasso will be fine. With apologies to “When Harry Met Sally” if you want to have what I am having look for 2016 Altesino Ross Di Montalcino ($23.00 Phoenix Wine), 2017 Fiore Nebbiolo D’Alba ($16.50 Phoenix Wine), and a 2015 Tezz Valpolicella Ripasso ($18.50 Phoenix Wine). Like I said don’t be bound by these brands/vintages. Total Wine has a nice selection as do most other wine shops. If you don’t want to try all three get as many as you want, or get none of them if you just want to listen in.
If you want to pair some food it might be a nice night to order a Pizza.
Email me at gasperthewineguy@gmail.com if you are interested and I will send you the Zoom information.
Because I do it for love the event is free but if you want to send PayPal/Venmo me a little something to help cover my expenses you won't hurt my feelings.
Let me know if you have any questions.
